Chiropractic Adjustments Influence Organ Health

Chiropractic adjustments influence Organ Health.

At least that's the significance of the 2011 study published in the Journal of Alternative Therapeutic Health Medicine called “Cerebral metabolic changes in men after chiropractic spinal manipulation.”

If only one study validated the influence of Chiropractic adjustments on the nervous system and visceral health, the aforementioned 2011 study would serve that very purpose.

pet scan chiropracticAuthored by a single Chiropractor working with a team of Medical Doctors in Japan, the conclusions found in this research was nothing short but incredible. The doctors used a $3 million P.E.T. scan to measure outcomes following Chiropractic adjustments. A P.E.T. scan is a powerful neuro-imaging technique used to investigate neuronal activity in the human brain. Use of this advanced technology immediately set the results of the study apart from most other Chiropractic research.

Chiropractic Adjustments Change the Brain

Brain and nervous system changes were measured in subjects after receiving a cervical adjustment. The findings concluded an increase in glucose metabolism in all areas of the brain except the cerebellar vermis, significantly lowered results in the stress response scale and visual analog scale, reduced muscle tone, and a significant decrease in salivary amylase (stress hormone). All of these measurements are major indicators in a reduction of stress hormones by slowing down the stimulation of the central nervous system.

When stress hormones are increased for a sustained period of time in the blood and body, major health problems occur. All Chronic disease can be traced back to elevated stress hormones and chemicals in the body. The results of this 2011 study indicate that abnormal spinal mechanics plays a direct role in increasing stress hormones, leaving the body susceptible to unwanted chronic diseases such as:

  • Cancer
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Excessive body weight
  • Hypertension
  • Type 1 autoimmune diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Immune system function

Chiropractic does not seek to treat or cure these conditions; however, when a vertebral subluxation interferes with the nervous system, the body changes physiologically towards a chronic disease state. Reducing central nervous system interference with a Chiropractic adjustment reduces stress hormones and improves organ health. Chiropractic serves a vital role in healthcare and this 2011 study corroborates that fact better than any single study previously published.

Calm Down Your Kiddo by Avoiding Soda

Soda could be making your kid angry

What does soda have to do with your child’s aggressive behavior? According to a new study, quite a bit!

A new study published in The Journal of Pediatrics found that children who consumed soda tended to measure higher on scales that measure aggressive behavior than kids who do not drink soda.

Of course –  this is not meant to entirely put the blame on soft drinks all together; but it does bring up a certain level of caution.

According to the study, mothers completed a checklist on children’s behaviors over the previous two months to measure withdrawal, attention and aggression. The mothers were also asked how many servings of soda their children drank per day and about other habits such as TV watching. Overall, 43 percent of the kids drank at least one soda per day and 4 percent drank four or more servings.

Seriously? Who the heck drinks 4 or more servings of soda per day?!?

Aggressive behavior was measured on a scale between 0 and 100 – with higher scores indicating more aggression. Kids who reportedly drank no soda scored 56 on the aggression scale, on average. That compared to 57 among kids who drank one serving per day, 58 among those who drank two servings, 59 among those who drank three servings and 62 for four soda servings or more per day. Researchers found that drinking two or four or more servings of soda per day was tied to higher aggression scores. Overall, kids who drank four or more servings of soda per day were twice as likely to destroy other people’s belongings, get into fights and physically attack people, compared to children who didn’t drink soda, according to the study.

The suggestions of the lead scientists were for children to stick to healthy beverages such as water to stay hydrated. Water is all natural with no potential side effects on behavior.

Back to School

It's Back to School for Kids

It's BACK to School time for all those kiddos! And with back to school, most educational programs will include spinal check up that includes a basic scoliosis screening. And while school nurses focus on scoliosis when it comes to spinal checkups, study after study has proven the link between asymmetries in the spine and organ tissue health.

In short: Your child's health is directly related to the alignment of their spine!

Now that they are back to school- New activities, new back packs, new classes, and new teachers are a few of the factors that contribute to an increased stress load for parents and children this time of the year. All of these factors significantly contribute to poor health outcomes whether symptoms are present or not. Every one of these stressors interacts with the nervous system, yet one of the most overlooked areas of health assessment and maintenance is the spine.

Spine health = Your Child's Health

Your child's spine is not simply a stack of bones that helps them to stand up straight. Rather, it's a neuro-structural organ that when moving correctly, allows for a cascade of signals to occur between the brain and the body. Research from one of the most well-respected medical journals in the world explains that when a spine is not moving correctly or in the proper position, a cascade of pathways are triggered in the spinal cord and nervous system. This alteration in the spine and nerve pathways, known as vertebral subluxation, predisposes a child or adult to a plethora of visceral chronic diseases as well as the progressive condition called Scoliosis. Scoliosis is a condition where the spine becomes increasingly curved and deformed. Scoliosis is very dangerous to organ function as it progresses.

Contrary to popular knowledge and belief, the cause of scoliosis relates more to nervous system dysfunction than genetics, physical traumas, or deformity. A 2000 study showed that any subtle changes to the health of the spine puts stress into the nervous system and sets the stage for scoliotic curves to be formed. The biggest obstacle in preventing or treating scoliosis is detection. Scoliosis progresses with an absence of symptoms, and by the time conditions present, the young person is already suffering.

Understanding the development of scoliosis empowers parents with purpose when taking their children to a Chiropractor before the smaller spinal problem can progress into something more severe and less reversible – like scoliosis. Vertebral subluxations are not rare and can even be found among infants who endured the trauma of childbirth.

Children Need Chiropractic Too!

Subluxation interferes with the nervous system but is very detectable and correctable by a Chiropractor.

Research continues to support the philosophy that Chiropractors have been subscribing to and teaching for the past 120 years. Spinal health plays a tremendous role in longevity and quality living and is very frequently overlooked by medical professionals until a severe condition like scoliosis begins showing symptoms. Chiropractic is committed to changing this system of health care by educating all people about the importance of spinal care. Children going back to school should serve as an annual reminder for families to have a spinal check-up by a Chiropractor professionally trained to help all people achieve better health and avoid the progression of preventable conditions that negatively impact children who are meant to be a healthy and full of abundant life.

Sleep Deprivation Disconnects Your Brain From Your Heart

Sleep Deprivation Disconnects Your Brain from Your Heart

If you find yourself having communication problems – you might be sleep deprived.

A UC Berkeley study shows that sleep deprivation prevents you from reading facial expressions accurately. Facial expressions are one the most important aspects of non-verbal communication. This means that lack of sleep can have serious consequences, such as not noticing that a child is sick or in pain, or that a potential mugger or violent predator is approaching.

According to the study author, “Recognizing the emotional expressions of someone else changes everything about whether or not you decide to interact with them, and in return, whether they interact with you.” You can read more in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Considering that two-thirds of the industrialized world population does not get quality sleep; it's safe to say we all have communication problems!

Study Design

For the experiment, 18 healthy young adults viewed 70 facial expressions that ranged from friendly to threatening, once after a full night of sleep, and once after 24 hours of being awake. Researchers scanned participants’ brains and measured their heart rates as they looked at the series of visages.

Brain scans as they carried out these tasks – generated through functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) – revealed that the sleep-deprived brains could not distinguish between threatening and friendly faces, specifically in the emotion-sensing regions of the brain’s anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex.

Additionally, the heart rates of sleep-deprived study participants did not respond normally to threatening or friendly facial expressions. Moreover, researchers found a disconnection in the neural link between the brain and heart that typically enables the body to sense distress signals.

“Sleep deprivation appears to dislocate the body from the brain,” said lead study author, Matthew Walker. “You can’t follow your heart.”

Sleep Deprivation Literally Blocks the Brain from the Body

As a consequence, study participants interpreted more faces, even the friendly or neutral ones, as threatening when sleep-deprived.

“They failed our emotional Rorschach test,” Walker said. “Insufficient sleep removes the rose tint to our emotional world, causing an overestimation of threat. This may explain why people who report getting too little sleep are less social and more lonely.”

On a more positive note, researchers recorded the electrical brain activity of the participants during their full night of sleep, and found that their quality of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) or dream sleep correlated with their ability to accurately read facial expressions. Previous research by Walker has found that REM sleep serves to reduce stress neurochemicals and soften painful memories.

“The better the quality of dream sleep, the more accurate the brain and body was at differentiating between facial expressions,” Walker said. “Dream sleep appears to reset the magnetic north of our emotional compass. This study provides yet more proof of our essential need for sleep.”

Chiropractic can Improve Sleep Quality

Studies state that when the body’s central circadian rhythms are disturbed, it results in increased levels of cortisol aka the stress hormone. When the cortisol levels remain high for a prolonged period, it reduces the density of the bones and the muscle mass, weakens the immune system, accumulates fat in the abdomen area, and impacts the functioning of the thyroid gland. All of these lead to poor health and back pain! Sometimes insomnia can also lead to mental disorders.

Although there are many medications available in the market, those that claim to solve the sleep disorders do not help to any great extent. These pills cause side effects and can also lead to cancer and heart attacks if used for too long. To have a peaceful sleep, you need to treat the actual cause of the problem from its roots. A good chiropractor will investigate the actual cause of the problem in depth and correct it.

Chiropractic care and  adjustments will help you to relax. It also improves the blood flow in the nervous system and corrects any misalignments, or sublaxations in the spine. These subluxations compress the nerves and cause lack of communication between the spine and the brain. These subluxations lead to a process called stress response which puts the body out of balance and do not let the body rest. A well trained chiropractor will adjust these subluxations with safe and careful techniques to get your body to function normally.

Along with chiropractic care, insomnia and sleep issues can be improved with significant changes in your lifestyle. The changes include the following:

  • Limited intake of caffeine
  • Eating dinner before six in the evening
  • Avoiding television and computer time an hour before bed
  • Staying active by doing regular exercises (not too close to bedtime)
  • Avoiding excess alcohol
  • Investing in a good supportive mattress and pillow that support your spine
  • And most importantly setting a daily routine

Regular chiropractic care can address and solve several problems that may be causing sleepless nights, such as back pain, breathing problems, and restless leg syndrome. Many people have felt that their sleep has improved after getting regular wellness adjustments. Regular chiropractic care can improve the symptoms and conditions of insomnia patients and helps them sleep better thus improving the quality of their day to day life. Plus, chiropractic care is much safer than most prescription sleep aids.

Acute Edema & Back Pain

Acute edema and Back Pain

There are literally hundreds of reasons why you could suffer from back pain. I'm writing this article to bring awareness to the fact that back pain could be caused by something as far fetched as “acute pulmonary edema”. Edema is fluid that builds up because of problems in our circulatory systems; mainly arteries and veins. This abnormal build up of fluid will eventually cause damage to our cells. Just think what happens when you over water plants. The cells of the plant take in all the water and eventually swell to their death.

When edema occurs, you can most certainly assume that there is heart failure also occuring, but it's important to know that edema can result in back pain as well.

Causes of edema:

Edema can arise from any combination of heart disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, inhaling smoke, improper salt balance and blood vessel disease. Edema can also result from blunt force traumas such as car accidents, blows to the head or serious falls. The most common cause of edema is heart failure.

Experts will often use X-rays, ECG, and monitor Homodynamic to discover edema. Of course, edema can lead to major problems, such as too much sodium, potassium, fluid build up and artery blockages that can result in clots.

Symptoms of Edema:

Edema can present with fatigue, coughing, one-side heart failure (Right often), breathing difficulties and of course back pain.

Edema can also effect your joints, cartilages, muscles etc, which can cause tenderness, ulcers of the legs, and so forth. Edema affects the veins found in the neck as well, which is one of the leading causes of back pain.

Edema and Back Pain Summary:

As I mentioned earlier, back pain can start with edema due to failure of the heart not pumping blood appropriately. As circulation continues to decrease, the tissues will become inflamed and begin to swell. This swelling will then place a large amount of pressure on your tissues including ligaments, muscles and tendons. This is where you can start to experience neck and or back pain.

Back pain has affected millions of people, yet the leading causes emerge from nerve and musculoskeletal disorders. Still, many diseases and disorders can cause back pain, including edema. In fact, when doctors discover musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, they often link one of the potential causes to edema.

Chiropractic Adjustments Can Prevent Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Interestingly, chiropractic adjustments can help to prevent arthritis.

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down to the point that it contributes to inflammation or restricted movement.

Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, knees, hips and spine.

Most people believe that osteoarthritis is an old person's disease and that it is entirely a consequence of aging. If that were the case, arthritis would be inevitable — and it's not.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), arthritis is more common among adults aged 65 years or older, but people of all ages (including children) can be affected. Approximately 66% of people with arthritis are younger than 65 and it's more common in women (26%) than men (19%) in every age group.

Here's a few other interesting facts about osteoarthritis:

  • Of people 18 to 44 years old, 7.1% report doctor-diagnosed arthritis.
  • Of people who are age 45–64, 29.3% report doctor-diagnosed arthritis.
  • In the 65 or older age group, 49.6% report doctor-diagnosed arthritis.

While the risk of developing most types of arthritis increases with age, keep in mind that it is not the only contributing factor [1].

One of the strongest predictors of developing osteoarthritis is sedentarism or a lack of proper movement.

Only Move the Joints You Want to Keep

Nothing becomes more important to a person’s health than the health of your joints.

As a chiropractor, I commonly see people with complaints of neck and back pain. We will always take x-rays to assess what the spine looks like, and sadly, over 90% of the time, we identify some degree of spinal degeneration.

Spinal degeneration presents as thinning of the cartilaginous disc between the vertebrae (called “degenerative disc disease”) as well as the formation of osteophytes, or bone spurs, along the edges of the bones.

This process can occur at any joint but is particularly troublesome in the spine, due to all of the neurological structures it can interfere with.

While we don’t want degeneration anywhere in our bodies, joints like hips, knees, and shoulders are all much easier to replace. However, we only get one spine, and generally speaking, a spine that is misaligned is going to cause all the other joints to deteriorate much faster.

The spine consists of 24 vertebral bones (plus the sacrum and coccyx) connected by 48 separate “facet” joints. These are the joints where Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is most commonly found. DJD is a gradual process that involves the wearing down of structures that make up a joint. This can happen anywhere in the skeletal system that has suffered a trauma or undergone too much “wear and tear.”

This is why it will be frequently be found on one side of the body. For instance, if someone tends to put more weight on their right leg, the right hip and knee will likely degenerate faster. This is unlike an inflammatory joint disease, like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), that will occur on both sides of the body to multiple joints.

While conditions like RA tend to be genetically inherited, structural degeneration can happen to anyone, which is why it’s the leading cause of joint pain in adults.

When told “getting old” is to blame, people are dis-empowered. Although you cannot do anything about aging, you can absolutely do everything to prevent unnatural wear and tear.

As a doctor of chiropractic who mainly works with joints, hearing that people are unhealthy because of aging is like telling a dentist that people get cavities due to old age. It's just not true.

Loss of Proper Joint Movement Accelerates Aging

Up until the late 80's, medical science taught that bed rest and elevation was the best someone could do to recover from hip, knee, ankle or back surgery.

In fact, most elite medical schools taught that a joint would heal best if it was allowed to rest.

It wasn't until 1987 when researchers started to understand that the slightest restriction of a joint will result in permanent and irreversible degeneration within just two weeks. [2]

The study further noted that if the restricted motion returned to normal, the degeneration would not be reversed but all progression would stop.

Today, we now know that motion is like lotion for your joints and aids in the recovery and health of those joints.

At it's most basic form, chiropractic adjustments are a concentrated form of motion for these joints and helps to reverse the process of degeneration.

The study made it clear that frequency of movement is important to halt the progress of arthritis.

This is exactly why the frequency of adjustments over time are important. While one adjustment is great for your body, the more you get, the better the results will be.

chiropractic care for arthritis

Long Term Chiropractic Care is Better than Short Term

This research also helped to clarify why regular long-term Chiropractic adjustments are necessary for spinal, posture, and organ health. Many people, particularly ones who already have some level of spinal degeneration present, need to be checked and/or adjusted more frequently than one time every two weeks. Every human should be seeing a Chiropractor, on a regular basis, according to the outcomes of a study like this one because it demonstrates the importance of proper moving joints; and who helps you to move your joints better than a Doctor of Chiropractic care!

Symptoms Are Not a Good Indicator for Care

A significant part of the research also did not find an association between pain and the onset of the degeneration progresses. The presence of pain is a poor indicator of whether a person needs a Chiropractic adjustment or not. Spinal degeneration can occur within two weeks of restricted vertebral movement. Pain may or may not be present for arthritis to be present or progressive.

The tug of gravity and the progression of spinal and joint degeneration from movement restrictions all contribute to the need for all people to visit a Chiropractor regularly. Humans age over time like all powerful structures. This research points out that regular spinal adjustments will slow the erosion process during aging. Chiropractic adjustments prevent the degeneration of spinal joints by increasing movement and removing interference to the central nervous system.

The degenerative process exists within the spine and nervous system of all people who have vertebral subluxation and are not regularly visiting a Chiropractor. Long-term regular Chiropractic adjustments maximize health and function of the body and organs. Better health awaits everyone who makes the choice to unlock the power that exists within the body.

How to Prevent Arthritis or Osteoarthritis

Hopefully you now understand that most forms of arthritis and osteoarthritis are preventable. More importantly, I hope that you stop blaming age and start thinking about all the other factors that play a bigger role – such as movement.

Osteoarthritis develops when the cartilage at the ends of our bones start to deteriorate. This deterioration occurs when our joints are not moving through their normal ranges of motion. This is why flexibility, mobility, exercise and chiropractic adjustments are so important when it comes to preventing this condition.

Patients always ask us what is the best adjustment frequency to maintain their spine.

My recommendation is the same that I do for myself and my family:

  • Weekly adjustments are the best.
  • At minimum, you want to get your spine adjusted every two weeks

Other factors that play a role include maintaining a healthy body weight, consuming an anti-inflammatory diet and staying hydrated.

Chiropractic Adjustments Help Reduce Blood Pressure

Chiropractic can help Reduce Blood Pressure

Over and over, people who have been treated by a chiropractor have experienced significant changes in their blood pressure. Regardless of the intention – people who get adjusted regularly have reported that their blood pressure drops. Interestingly, people still doubt the power of a chiropractic adjustment and consider it coincidental when it comes to secondary health improvements. However, research published in a prestigious medical journal in 2007 proved these results were legitimate.

Chiropractic Blood Pressure Study

In 2007, a group of medical doctors and chiropractors decided to split up a random group of people who had never experienced any back or neck pain in their life. This vital detail served as a key part of the study because it proved the link between blood pressure problems and the spine regardless of the presence of back pain. One of the groups received a Chiropractic adjustment while the other group received a placebo or fake adjustment. Also of importance was the technique used to make the real adjustment. It was a low-force technique that did not require any popping or cracking sounds. The subjects had no idea which group they were in and the results were phenomenal.

chiropractic reduced blood pressure

What did they find?

The group that received the real adjustment had an average reduction of 17 points on the systolic blood pressure measurement(top number) and 10 points on the diastolic scale(bottom number). The conclusion to the study pointed out that the benefits received in the real Chiropractic adjustment group would require the aid of two blood pressure medications given in combination to be achieved through drug therapy. This meant that the adjustment helped improve blood pressure better than two medications could do.

This study continues to strengthen the foundation of Chiropractic

The nervous system is about so much more than bad backs and sore necks. This ground-breaking research links blood pressure problems directly with a minor neck misalignment. Misaligned vertebrae are known as vertebral subluxations and there is nothing minor about them. The science links vertebral subluxation directly or indirectly to many of the unwanted symptoms most people suffer from today, including high blood pressure. Every man, woman, and child deserves to understand and benefit from a spinal checkup and Chiropractic adjustments on a regular basis.

An Xray Analyzed by a Chiropractor is the only way to identify this problem

Chiropractic Provides Stress Relief

Chiropractic offers Stress Relief

Chiropractors often encounter people that will tell them about their previous Chiropractic experience. It is very common for me to hear about all the benefits of chiropractic care. Everything from headaches, neck pain and back pain; to improvements in sleeping, digestion, stress relief, energy and hormone balance.

It's also interesting when someone says that chiropractic worked so well for them that they are fortunate to not have needed it in years. I cringe at this because to believe the adjustment is only for those who have some sort of symptom or back pain is to believe that exercise is only important when you're not fit. According to the best science and research in the world, this perception could not be further from the truth.

Several studies done in 2000, 2005, 2006 and 2009 demonstrated that healthy individuals exhibited heart rate variability responses following adjustments. What the heck is heart rate variability and what does it have to do with stress relief?

Heart Rate Variability

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) evaluates the balancing act between the sympathetic nervous system (your fight and flight response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest and digest). An imbalance in HRV is the #1 risk factor for cardiac death. HRV is also a way to measure nervous system stress and hence the effectiveness of stress relief treatments

In short, HRV allows us to determine how healthy your nervous system is and how much stress is being placed on the heart.

How does chiropractic impact HRV?

Chiropractic Balances HRV

In short, all the research studies demonstrated that the groups receiving chiropractic adjustments recorded significant heart rate and heart-rate variability changes within five minutes of the adjustment.

WOW – it only takes 5 minutes to improve your nervous system!!!!

When compared the results to groups receiving placebo adjustments and No ECG changes were noted in the second group.

This research not only confirms that Chiropractic adjustments change heart function and reduce stress; but it also provides insight on how beneficial it can be long term – even in the absence of symptoms.

Chiropractic care is not simply about back and neck pain as much as overall organ health. Balancing the central nervous system by removing interference is the mechanism that describes why an adjustment improves heart function. Dozens of well-known studies have documented these results.

One important aspect of this particular study is that the adjustment was specifically recorded taking only five seconds to perform. The patient preparation and set up added some time, but the actual adjustment only took five seconds. Many believe that a Chiropractic visit will take a long time and achieving excellent results will take hours sitting in a doctor’s office. The study continues to prove that the actual adjustment does not do the healing and healing occurs after the adjustment removes the interference in the central nervous system. The ECG study showed that the body began doing the healing within just five minutes of the five second adjustment.

A new era of technology and science help solve problems at a much faster rate than years past. Thousands and thousands of scientists and researchers spend their entire lives being paid millions of dollars each year to discover better ways to improve heart health. Millions of people could avoid dangerous drugs, surgery, and cardiovascular events if they knew about the documented findings revealed in research studies. Chiropractors strive to educate the public and improve health and longevity without using chemical solutions.

People who believe they do not need Chiropractic care would be well-served to understand the truth, scientific evidence that details the power of an adjustment. The human heart is a vital organ and requires a Chiropractor to maintain it’s optimal health and function.
