Natural Allergy Treatment

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

The next time you sneeze, it may be a good time to visit austin chiropractor Dr. Daniel Gonzalez.  Yes, a chiropractor :)

Most people never think about it, but chiropractic care can help provide allergy relief.

How?  Why?

Because chiropractic care, often thought necessary for only back and neck problems, can help with keeping the body operating at peak performance by stimulating the nervous system which controls all bodily functions including your immune system.  There are many reason's why the Immune system is suppressed…primarily nutrition, which is why Dr. Daniel recommends a Good Greens Supplement!  The body’s immune system helps with preventing disease and infection, dealing with stress and overall well being. The immune system also tackles the invasion in a body of foreign substances such as pollution, dust, dead cells, etc. Current research is showing that there is a direct link between the nervous system and the immune system. Chiropractors remove nerve interference and allow the immune system to work optimally.

The immune system is affected by nerves and hormones. An immune system not operating effectively can:

  • Fail to recognize and remove abnormal cells such as those that are cancerous.
  • Be unable to fight infections.
  • Overreact to things such as bee stings, penicillin, certain foods, pollen etc.
  • Become depressed making you more vulnerable to disease.

The best way to optimize your nervous system is by keeping your spine aligned and feeding your body a good greens supplement!

Burst Training with 12 Exercises

12well_physed-tmagArticle

An article in the May-June issue of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal has laid out 12 exercises (using only body weight, a chair and a wall) that satisfies the latest requirements for Burst training or high-intensity effort, which essentially combines a long run and a visit to the weight room into about seven minutes of steady discomfort — all based on science.

“There’s very good evidence” that high-intensity interval training provides “many of the fitness benefits of prolonged endurance training but in much less time,” says Chris Jordan, the director of exercise physiology at the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, Fla., and co-author of the new article.

As many of you know, I've always been a fan of high intensity or Burst training!

This 12 exercise program offers High Intensity Interval training by alternating an exercise that emphasizes the large muscles in the upper body with those in the lower body. During the breaks of each exercise, the unexercised muscles have a moment to “catch their breath” which makes the order of the exercises important.

HOW TO:

Perform each exercise in rapid succession, allowing 30 seconds for each, while, throughout, the intensity hovers at about an 8 on a discomfort scale of 1 to 10

The seven minutes should be, unpleasant or at least with enough intensity that you cannot have a conversation with someone or pay attention to the TV :)

The upside is, after seven minutes, you’re done!

Heart disease is the #1 killer of our time. And modern medicine with all its technology and medications–with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol and blood pressure–have it all wrong.

MYTHS VS. FACTS

Myth–High cholesterol is the cause of heart disease. Fact–Cholesterol is only a minor player in the cascade of inflammation which is a cause of heart disease.

Myth–High cholesterol is a predictor of heart attack. Fact–There is no correlation between cholesterol and heart attack.

Myth– Lowering cholesterol with statin drugs will prolong your life. Fact– There is no data to show that statins have a significant impact on longevity.

Myth– Statin drugs are safe. Fact– Statin drugs can be extremely toxic including causing death.

Myth– Blood Pressure drugs are useful in men, women and the elderly. Fact– Blood Pressure drugs do not work alone!

Myth– Normal Blood Pressure means you are safe from strokes or heart attacks Fact– More people have strokes and heart attacks with normal blood pressure than ever before!

Myth– Saturated fat is dangerous. Fact– Saturated fats are not dangerous. The killer fats are the transfats from partially hydrogenated oils.

Myth– The higher the cholesterol, the shorter the lifespan. Fact– Higher cholesterol protects you from gastrointestinal disease, pulmonary disease and hemorrhagic stroke.

Myth– A high carbohydrate diet protects you from heart disease. Fact– Simple processed carbs and sugars predispose you to heart disease.

Myth– Fat is bad for your health. Fact– Monounsaturated and saturated fats protect you from metabolic syndrome. Sugar is the foe in cardiovascular disease.

Myth– There is good (HDL) cholesterol and bad (LDL) cholesterol. Fact– This is over-simplistic. You must fractionate LDL and HDL to assess the components.

Myth– Cholesterol causes heart disease. Fact– Cholesterol is only a theory in heart disease and only the small component of LP(a) or “bb shot” LDL predisposes one to oxidation and inflammation.

Genetically Modified Organisms

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Just when you thought the market for controversy over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) was completely saturated, a new study published in the Journal of Organic Systems finds that pigs raised on a mixed diet of GM corn and GM soy had higher rates of intestinal problems, “including inflammation of the stomach and small intestine, stomach ulcers, a thinning of intestinal walls and an increase in haemorrhagic bowel disease, where a pig can rapidly ‘bleed-out’ from their bowel and die.”

Spine Misalignments

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Joint immobility (vertebral subluxation) can lead to permanent damage in as little as two weeks: Journal of Clinical Biomechanics 1987 (2:223-229)  Spine misalignments cause joint immobility.

“The evidence in this review shows that immobilizing healthy joints in experimental animals can lead inexorably to arthritis. With respect to (human) patients, it can be postulated that immobilization (vertebral subluxation), for whatever cause, will initiate a pathogenic chain of musculoskeletal degenerative changes.”…..

“If the joint was stuck (subluxation) for even just one day a week for 14 weeks then the joint showed as much damage as if the joint was stuck (subluxated) for 14 days straight!”….. “if the immobility (subluxation) is not corrected within two weeks the osteoarthritis becomes permanent.”

Naturally Reduce Sun Damage

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

sun_protectionHow to Naturally Reduce Sun Damage

It's June…which officially means we are in full effect for summer time.  It also means we're spending a lot more time in the sun (hopefully around the water!).

Aesthetics aside, sun burn is highly damaging to the skin, prematurely aging it and affecting your health and increasing the risk of skin cancer.  Unfortunately this usually means using harmful and often TOXIC sunscreens!  Here are a few things to consider:

1. First, Realize that you should get some sun without sunscreen!

When you first get out in the sun, start by exposing your skin to it for short time frames of just a few minutes. If you are dark skinned, you could start with 15-30 minutes. Then build up the amount of time you expose your skin to the sun over a period of a few weeks, increasing the time little by little.  This will allow your skin to gradually adjust rather than going from A to Z and shocking it and increasing the likelihood of burning. Once you have built up your sun exposure, aim to only directly expose your skin to the sun for 20 minutes a day for very fair skin away from the hottest part of the day, then use clothing and natural sun cream to protect your skin for any further time in the sun. The darker your skin, the more time you can spend in the sun without covering up or using sun cream. If you have very dark skin, you may not need to do anything at all but it’s best to err on the side of caution.

2. Wear sunscreen, but make sure it's not toxic!

Wearing sunscreen is important and i'm not advising you to avoid it at all (especially if your fair skinned), however, many suncreens are super toxic!

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just published their 2012 guide to safe sunscreens. They reviewed over 1800 sunscreens and over 257 brands. They found more than 75% of the sunscreens contained toxic chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer and other health issues.

Toxic, chemical-laden sun creams that you find in any pharmacy or grocery store are harmful to your body.

According to the EWG: Our review…shows that some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some have toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, some act like estrogen and disrupt hormones, and several can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. The FDA has not established rigorous safety standards for sunscreen ingredients. Sunscreens haven’t been regulated since 1978 in the USA, and the SPF factor only tells you how effective a sunscreen is against UVB rays which cause sunburn.

Here's a list of Unsafe, Toxic Chemicals in Sunscreen:

  • Para amino benzoic acid
  • Octyl salicyclate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Cinoxate
  • Dioxybenzone
  • Phenylbenzimidazole
  • Homosalate
  • Menthyl anthranilate
  • Octocrylene
  • Methoxycinnamate
  • Parabens

3. The Sun doesn't cause Cancer, SICK or UNHEALTHY People in the Sun get Cancer!

Truth is, the sun is essential for your health. If you think about it, we were genetically designed to be outside and developed because of the sun.  Without the sun, most plants couldn't grow and we would perish from a lack of Vitamin D3.  Of course, you can have too much of a good thing. I don’t recommend letting your skin burn, and this is a common point people miss. Getting a moderate amount of sunshine daily can actually help decrease your risk of certain types of cancers.

If you do the  things that are necessary to be healthy, your body will use the suns energy to produce health, rather than being vulnerable to diseases like cancer.  Focus on as much of your diet as possible being fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables. They are rich in antioxidants and nutrients and each color provides a different profile of these health-protectors. The more antioxidants and nutrition your body absorbs, the more effective your body will be at combating any negative effects of too much sun exposure and sun burn. It will also help you to feel and look as amazing as possible!

4. Sunscreen and Sun Damage Protectants that I Use

Kiss My Face SPF 30

The best sunscreen is honestly a hat and a shirt.  No chemicals for the skin to absorb, no questions about whether the product works and no bogus claims like “sunblock.” (No conventional product blocks out all rays. Which is why the FDA is trying to ban the term.)

When buying sunscreen I’d first check the EWG database. Here are my top 3 recommended brands of the top natural sunscreens:
1. Kiss My Face SPF 30

2. 100% Pure Hydration Organic Pomegranate

3. Aubrey Organics SPF 30 Children’s Unscented Sensitive Skin

These healthier sunscreens contain Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as a more natural form of sunblock. However even these ingredients aren’t flawless as you’ll see in the EWG ratings system.

4. Foods and Supplements that I Use

According to the American Cancer Society, oxidative damage can increase your cancer risk, so I recommend eating a diet high in certain foods which can potentially decrease your risk.

Here's a List of the best foods and supplements to protect your skin:

Antioxidants (red wine, blueberries, red grapes, mangosteen)
Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon and fish oil)
Catechins (green and white tea)
Vitamin E (pumpkin seeds, almonds, and asparagus)
Beta-carotene (carrots and red bell peppers)
Vitamin D3 (salmon, oysters, eggs, mushrooms)
