Chronic pain is a pervasive issue and fibromyalgia is a very common form. It is a chronic condition whose symptoms include muscle and tissue pain, fatigue, depression, and sleep disturbances.  Recent data suggests that central sensitization, in which nerves in your spinal cord become sensitized by inflammation or cell damage, may be involved in the way fibromyalgia sufferers process pain.  That said, it's important to have your spine adjusted to make sure that every single vertebrae is moving freely as well as have your diet adjusted.  Foods that cause inflammation include:  Sugar, Caffeine, Nightshades (eggplant), Yeast and artificial ingredients (artificial sweeteners, colors, preservatives).

Best Austin Chiropractor for Back Pain

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

About 80 percent of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their life.  Most people who have had a consult with their MD or even orthopedic show no spinal abnormalities on an X-ray yet suffer excruciating pain. The reality is that while these doctors are trained in Medicine and Surgery, they know very little when it comes to Biomechanics and musculoskeletal health.

Even when the pain is in the lower back, the problem tends to be with the entire spine.  Chiropractors employ manipulation, posture and mechanical analysis and nutrition— all small adjustment of the body— to help align a patient's spine.

People who come in only when they're in pain are missing the bigger picture.  We need to think of our spine the way we do our teeth, using preventive care to stay healthy.

Junk Food Junky

Don't Be a Junk Food Junky

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

If it's illegal for kids to buy cigarettes, or you wouldn't give your children cigarettes- then why would you buy them junk food?

According to researchers from the Scripps Research Institute, Junk food (Doritos, Cheetos, Pop-Tarts, Frosted Flakes, McDonalds) is as addictive as heroin.

Scientist's have previously proven links between drug addiction and fast-food addiction, but now there is a growing body of research that is finding out how junk food is hard wiring our brains for cravings.

A study published in “Nature Neuroscience,” likened the affects of high-fat, high-calorie fast food to those of cocaine or heroin, in animals at least.

The researchers showed that the pleasure-center in rats brains were overstimulated from the fast food similar to an addict's cocaine binge. Eventually, the pleasure centers became so overloaded that rats needed more and more food to feel normal, according to Paul H. Kenny, an associate professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute.

Throughout the study, Kenny and his co-author studied three groups of lab rats for 40 days. The first group ate healthy food. The second ate a limited amount of junk food. The third group, however, was allowed to gorge on high-fat, high-calorie foods and became obese.

The startling side effect? The brains of the obese rats changed.
“The body adapts remarkably well to change — and that's the problem,” Kenny said in a press release. “When the animal overstimulates its brain pleasure centers with highly palatable food, the systems adapt by decreasing their activity. However, now the animal requires constant stimulation from palatable food to avoid entering a persistent state of negative reward”.

During the study, the rats lost complete control over the ability to regulate whether they were hungry, often eating despite electric shocks. When the obese rats were put on a healthy diet, they refused to eat, starving themselves for two weeks.

In another study, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City showed that feeding rats a diet high in saturated fat, calories and sugar — which is the typical make-up for a fast-food menu item — lowered the rats ability to respond to leptin, a hormone that helps regulate eating behavior by controlling how full one feels. As rats grew fatter, the amount of leptin in their bodies increased signaling that they were dangerously close to starvation. They continued to overeat and gain weight.

Those who yo-yo diet face similar problems that those going through withdrawal do, Boston University researchers proved last year. According to Pietro Cottone, an assistant professor in the Laboratory of Addictive Disorders at BU, dieters seek out foods to avoid the negative feelings that they experience if they are deprived of their favorite comfort foods.

“These findings confirm what we and many others have suspected,” Kenny said, “that over-consumption of highly pleasurable food triggers addiction-like neuroadaptive responses in brain reward circuitries, driving the development of compulsive eating. Common mechanisms may therefore underlie obesity and drug addiction.”

natural arthritis treatment

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Do you or someone you know suffer from arthritis? Tell them about natural arthritis treatment. Everyone should be informed that arthritis doesn't have to be an end to an active lifestyle. Prior generations may have accepted the condition as an inevitable part of aging and been given a standard prescription of bed rest and drug therapies. However, today it has become recognized that appropriate exercise and nutrition are also critical to managing arthritis effectively, and there are a much wider range of treatment options. Chiropractors play an important role in not only relieving pain, but helping patients with arthritis continue to live a more independent, active lifestyle without the use of harmful drugs or surgery.

There are 2 forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Both result in pain primarily due to inflammation that affects joints and other parts of the body as a result of more than 100 “rheumatic diseases”, such as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. These disorders destroy joints, bones, muscles, cartilage and other connective tissues. While arthritis is most often seen in middle aged and older adults, it can also afflict younger people. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 22% of American adults (about 50 million people) report having been diagnosed with arthritis. Their symptoms may include pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints.

How Chiropractic can help
For many arthritis sufferers, treatment begins with rest and medication. But if you have arthritis, a chiropractic physician can help you develop a well-rounded, long-term approach to managing your arthritis in two other very important ways:

Designing an exercise program based on your own unique requirements. Such a program usually focuses on a combination of goals, including (1) restoring any lost range of motion in your joints, (2) improving your flexibility and endurance, and (3) increasing your muscle tone and strength. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that inactivity can make joints affected by arthritis even more painful and stiff. It can also have other negative health effects. A properly designed and supervised exercise program can reduce these risks.

Suggesting dietary changes and/or nutritional supplements that may be effective in reducing or controlling inflammation in your joints. Some research indicates that certain foods can have a role in either increasing or suppressing the body’s natural inflammatory response. Making adjustments to your diet may reduce swelling, redness and pain related to arthritis.

Both the symptoms and underlying causes of arthritis can vary a great deal by individual, so it is important that you consult your healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and to put in place a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Drug Overdose Deaths

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

According to a new report, more women are dying from prescription painkiller overdoses than ever before that the CDC now considers it a growing health epidemic.

According to the CDC study, men are still more likely to die of overdoses but the number of women dying from prescription pain killers has increased 5 fold over the last ten years!!! This comes down to 5x's more deaths in women than from cocaine and heroin combined. Additionally, only 12% of these deaths were suicides.

The rate of prescription drug overdose deaths of women increased 400% from 1999 to 2010, compared with an increase of 250% for men. More men die of prescription painkiller overdoses — about 23,000 in 2010, compared with 15,300 for women.

It was reported that women may be more prone to overdoses because they're more likely to have chronic pain, be prescribed painkillers, have higher doses, and use them longer than men.

What’s a good Mattress or Pillow?

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

One of the more popular questions I get asked by new patients is what is the best mattress. My answer is always the same: there's not 1 best mattress out there and it really depends on the person. I go on to talk about how we are all different heights, weights and densities and truth is- some surfaces will do better for you than others. So it is a bit of trial and error when it comes to finding the right one. However, there are a few things that EVERYONE should consider when purchasing sleep aids.

A great mattress that properly supports your body is the first step to getting great, restorative sleep. The problem is that over 90% of mattresses contain toxic chemicals!!! Some common chemicals found in mattresses include polybrominated diphenyl ethers, boric acid, formaldehyde, and antimony. This is why I recommend Keetsa Eco Friendly Mattresses and Pillows.

1. Is your bed causing toxic build up? By law, mattresses have to pass certain standards for being flame retardant. As many of the substances used to make regular mattresses are not naturally flame retardant, this means that manufacturers must add chemicals to be able to satisfy the flame retardant requirements (which include it not catching fire when a blow torch is used on it). According to an article taken from Dr. Joseph Mercola,

“Manufacturers are dousing them [mattresses] with highly toxic flame-retardant chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ether, better known as PBDE, which do NOT have to be disclosed in any way.

PBDEs, which have been banned in Canada, Europe and several states, build up in your body over time, and what you absorb or inhale does not go away. This is concerning not only because of the health problems PBDE is associated with (brain and reproductive damage, decreased sperm quality, thyroid problems and even cancer at high levels), but also because of how pervasive these chemicals have become.”

Considering how much time we spend sleeping, the chemicals in a mattress can be a big source of exposure that ultimately cause allergies, asthma, fertility problems/hormone imbalance and even autism in sensitive individuals.

2. Is your bed radiating you while you sleep?
There's even good solid evidence for the potential dangers of the springs of mattresses amplifying electromagnetic radiation during sleep. (For this reason, and also to reduce inflammation, It's a good idea to sleep on a grounding mat on your bed). Studies show that the springs used to support your mattress can be magnetized, and sleeping on a mattress that has magnetized springs is not a good idea for your health. A simple way to confirm that the mattress you’re purchasing isn’t magnetized is to take a liquid-filled compass and move it over the entire surface of the mattress. If the compass reading for the north pole is not deflected more than 10 degrees, then the likelihood of the springs being magnetized is pretty low.

Even if a mattress isn’t causing these problems, switching to organic/natural options is an easy way to reduce chemical exposure.

So How Should You Shop for a Mattress?

This is not an easy task. Manufacturers are not required to label or disclose which chemicals their mattresses contain. Further, many state that their mattresses are chemical-free, when in reality they are not. One way to find a safe mattress is to have a doctor or your austin chiropractor :) write you a prescription for a chemical-free mattress, and then find a manufacturer to make one for you. You can also search for 100% wool, toxin-free mattresses, Latex/Natural Rubber materials or Organic Cottons.

A second option that seems reliable is finding a mattress that uses a Kevlar, bullet-proof type of material in lieu of chemicals for fire-proofing. These are available in most big stores, and will help you to avoid some of the toxicity.

If cost is an issue then get creative and make your own mattress…
Start by purchasing 100% organic cotton or flannel blankets. Sew them together at the end, put them in cotton berry or a cloth cover and you’ll have a mattress that’s relatively inexpensive

If you already have a mattress at home, putting it into a waterproof mattress cover may also help to reduce your exposure to toxins.

Chiropractic Austin, Tx

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Insurance companies have been increasingly pushing plan members to utilize drug-based services over more corrective approaches for years, citing cost savings as the major reason.

A study in the November 2010 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics looked at the cost comparison of the most common types of back pain when treated by a medical doctor versus when treated by a chiropractic doctor. What they found was shocking!

Out of 85,000 Blue Cross/Blue Shield patients involved in a 2-year study where each patient had their own choice of whom to see for treatment (MD versus chiropractor), the paid costs for episodes of care initiated with a doctor of chiropractic were 40% less expensive than episodes initiated with a medical doctor.

40% less expensive care to get to the actual cause and correct the underlying condition versus 40% more expensive care to treat just the symptoms of the condition. Sounds kinda crazy that any insurance company would promote drug-based symptom care when it is almost twice as expensive as chiropractic, but nobody is accusing insurance companies of making rational decisions.

The main point is this: We live in a pharmaceutical world where everyone is being led to believe that you can medicate yourself back to good health. We have doctors pushing drugs on their patients, we have patients clamoring for more drugs because they see ads on TV every night that tell them to “ask their doctor if X is right for them”, and we have an insurance industry that actually pays for drugs instead of covering valuable services that can fix the patient’s problem for the long-term.
