The power that made your body is the same power that heals your body.  By design, your body is Healthy.  It's up to you to keep it that way!  This is an idea that we are constantly reminding patients about every day at Family Health Chiropractic. The best definition of health is optimal cell function. Ultimately, the brain, spinal cord and  nerves are what control function.  This is why taking care  of your spine is such an important role in health.  If you provide the elements that cells require for function and avoid those elements that are toxic by nature – you have the best chance of experiencing your true health potential.

Water is also at the top of that list; water is one of those essential elements. Water is IT!

chiropractor-austin-tx-add-water

For me, it's much easier to stay hydrated in the sizzling summer, but it’s important year round, even in the cold winter. In fact, at a time when our immune systems are compromised, we tend to decrease water intake and increase toxins.  Symptoms of dehydration include constipation, dizziness, fatigue as well as skin, hair and nail issues. But like all essential elements, water should not be thought of as a “treatment” for dehydration or a way to avoid constipation; but rather a critical component of a healthy lifestyle. A

The daily requirement for water will vary according to your body weight. A good rule of thumb or best practice is to consume at least 50 % of your body weight (lbs) in fluid ounces of water (and an additional 50% in healthy food choices – fruits and vegetables).

Optimally we should drink pure spring water from an our own well/land. The best water source for the modern city dweller is Reverse Osmosis,.

The trend in healthier water consciousness today has led to an unfortunate trade off for the environment – plastic pollution. Millions of plastic bottles end up in andfills and in the oceans every day. In fact, there are “islands” of plastic flotsam clustered on the surface of the Pacific Ocean now that are so large that they show up on ships’ radar. One such cluster, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is reported to be larger than the state of Texas – and growing.

We have a solution to both problems. Buy a cool canteen. A great “Best Practices” in maintaining health is to invest in a re-useable stainless steel canteen. In our practice we found that when patients purchase a non-disposable canteen that they love they keep it (and their water supply) with them at all times. This increases water intake substantially. You get all the health benefits – saving yourself – and the planet, all at once.

Summary Points:

  • Consume 50 %(+) of body weight in oz. of pure water
  • Reduce caffeinated beverages and alcoholic beverages
  • Eliminate added salt

| Austin Chiropractor | Poor Posture Equals Poor Health

What is Posture?

Posture is the position in which you hold your body while standing, sitting or lying down.

Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie so as to place the least strain on muscles and ligaments while you are moving or performing weight-bearing activities.

Good posture helps you in the following ways:

  • Keeps bones and joints in the correct position (alignment) so that muscles are being used properly.
  • Helps cut down on the wear and tear of joint surfaces (such as the knee) to help prevent the onset of arthritis.
  • Decreases the strain on the ligaments in the spine.
  • Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions.
  • Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, which allows the body to use less energy.
  • Prevents backache and muscular pain.

What is Poor Posture?

Postural dysfunction or “Poor” posture is defined as when our spine is positioned in unnatural positions, in which the curves are emphasized and this results in the joints, muscles and vertebrae being in stressful positions.

This prolonged poor positioning results in a build up of pressure on these tissues.

As we get older, bad habits such as slouching and inactivity cause muscle fatigue and tension that ultimately lead to poor posture.

The complications of poor posture include back pain, spinal dysfunction, joint degeneration, rounded shoulders and a potbelly.

Painful conditions associated with poor posture are so common that most people have some firsthand knowledge of these problems.

Low back pain is the most frequent complaint but research shows neck, shoulder and arm pain has become increasingly widespread as a result of postural dysfunction.

Contributing Factors To Postural Dysfunction

  • Lack of education or awareness of correct posture
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Occupational demands
  • Joint stiffness
  • Decreased fitness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle tightness
  • Poor core stability
  • Poor ergonomic work-stations

Conditions Poor Posture Can Cause

While back and neck pain top the list of postural dysfunction, there are many others — such as poor balance, headaches, and breathing difficulties.

A few other conditions linked to poor posture include:

1. Incontinence. Poor posture promotes stress incontinence — when you leak a little urine if you laugh or cough. Slouching increases abdominal pressure, which puts pressure on the bladder. The position also decreases the ability of the pelvic floor muscles to hold against that pressure.

2. Constipation. Poor posture on a toilet — hunched over with your knees lower than your hips — can promote constipation. Constipation is characterized by fewer than three bowel movements per week; hard, dry stools; straining to move the bowels; and a sense of an incomplete evacuation.

3. Heartburn and slowed digestion. Slouched posture after a meal can trigger heartburn caused by acid reflux (when stomach acid squirts back up into the esophagus). Slouching puts pressure on the abdomen, which can force stomach acid in the wrong direction. Some evidence suggests that transit in the intestines slows down when you slouch.

4. Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Disease.  Changes in spine alignment can also lead to blood vessel constriction, which in turn affects nutrient and oxygen supply and can result in blood clots and deep vein thrombosis.  All of these side effects can greatly increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease if the misalignment goes untreated.

5. Hyperkyphosis. Hyperkyphosis is a spinal deformity causing a forward-curved posture of the upper back (thoracic spine). Sometimes, a person's poor posture can cause the thoracic curvature to become excessive and stiff, making it difficult to change. Such is the case with hyperkyphosis (sometimes called “humpback,” “round back,” or “dowager’s hump”). This condition can affect people of all ages, but the thoracic curvature most often begins to increase in people over 40 and continues with advancing age. It is believed that 20% to 40% of older adults—both men and women—will develop hyperkyphosis.

HyperKyphosis “Humpback” Predicts Mortality

A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that kyphotic posture was associated with an increased rate of death due to atherosclerosis.

The authors specifically noted:

“Hyperkyphosis is associated with restrictive pulmonary disease and poor physical function, suggesting that hyperkyphosis might be associated with other adverse health outcomes.”

The study found a 44% increase death rate in individuals with hyperkyphosis and the trend towards mortality increased with greater kyphotic curvature of the spine.

Although hyperkyphosis is generally thought to be due to osteoporosis, this study did not support that notion.

Hyperkyphotic posture includes a rounded back, hunched shoulders, and a forward leaning head.

Bad Posture Negatively Impacts Health

Bad posture has been specifically connected to increased risk of death.

For deaths due to atherosclerosis, participants with hyper-kyphotic posture had a significant 2.4 times greater rate of death.

And here’s probably one of the most important findings: even at a mild degree of hyper-kyphotic posture, there was a definite rate of greater mortality!

This means that everyone in a community is at risk, no matter how small their posture deviation may be.

Everyone can relate to bad posture. The problem is that the majority will relate bad posture to a cosmetic issue, not one that destroys organ function. Studies like this shine light on the fact that bad posture literally contributes to disease processes and early death over a period of time.

Communities must know that Chiropractic seeks to change structure as it relates to function and this study helps to confirm the need for that mission.

Every Chiropractic technique will help improve posture by correcting vertebral subluxation.

Chiropractic adjustments have a direct influence on the nervous system that is always attempting to balance posture.

In my opinion, based on this study, Chiropractic care clearly adds years to life and life to years by improving posture through the detection and
correction of subluxation.

This allows the entire profession to take the focus off pain and move the patient’s focus onto the significant benefits of an improved quality of life.

Whole body health stems from lifetime Chiropractic care for the correction and preservation of posture.

Natural Ear Infection Treatment | Austin Chiropractor Helps Ear Infections Naturally

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Austin Chiropractor says when the spine is misaligned it affects the normal draining of the Eustachian tubes. Stagnate water left in the ears provides a breeding ground for bacterial growth. A chiropractic adjustment releases the pressure on the tubes allowing normal drainage to occur and reduces the incidence of ear infections.

45 children with ear infections were treated with chiropractic care. 93% of the cases resolved under care. 75% within 10 days or less. J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 1996 Mar-Apr;19(3):169-77.

Austin Chiropractor Dr. Daniel Gonzalez has treated hundreds of infants and children with ear infections.  Chiropractic is safe, effective and established as a natural treatment.

austin chiropractor natural ear infectionEar infections can clear up without antibtiotic treatment.  Here's a good “wait-and-see” approach:

Children 6 to 23 months with mild inner ear pain in one ear for less than 48 hours and a temperature less than 102.2 F (39 C)
Children 24 months and older with mild inner ear pain in one or both ears for less than 48 hours and a temperature less than102.2 F (39 C) (source)

If you choose to support the immune system naturally while focusing on comfort measures. For those that prefer to avoid Tylenol and other pain medications that may delay the healing process, here are some natural alternatives . . .

Garlic & Mullein Oil

According to a recent study conducted by Washington State University, garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at killing bacterial strains related to foodborne illness. They also found that it often worked in a fraction of the time. Use a dropper to put 2 to 3 drops in the ear. (Sing a song to keep the child distracted, since they will need to lay there for 30 seconds to allow the oil to get all the way in the ear canal.) The warmth of the oil helps to reduce the pain (as does the lavender oil) and can be used once an hour. Use at least four times a day, but preferably six or more, until the child is well.

Massage

Massaging the outside of the ear and face/jaw/neck area with diluted essential oils is thought to reduce inflammation and facilitate the drainage of excess fluid. “Massage in a downward direction behind the ear on the neck and apply gentle inward pressure in front of the ear toward the cheek (about where sideburns would be).”

Chiropractic Care

The lymph nodes need properly functioning muscles to contract with your baby’s head movements in order to flush out lymph fluid and congestion that pools in the area.  If the bones in the top of your baby’s neck become restricted (due to birth, or any other type of physical stressor), the muscles around that area cannot contract and work correctly.  If the muscles don’t contract perfectly, then the body has a hard time flushing out the fluid in the ear canals.  Adjustments also boost the immune system and help the body to function optimally.

Power Poses | Best Austin Chiropractor Discusses Power Posing

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Thoughts become things.  Our body language can tell the world a lot about us.  How you carry yourself can also have an impact on your personal confidence. People draw conclusions about how confident or insecure we may be simply through our gestures and posture. But what does our body language say to us? According to Amy Cuddy, psychologist and Harvard Business School professor, we can change our outcomes by simply adjusting the way we carry ourselves.

Through Cuddy’s research she has defined what she calls ‘power poses.’ These poses involve making ourselves big, with outstretched arms and legs. This body language can actually change how we feel by increasing our testosterone production, a hormone that gives us energy and confidence, while decreasing our cortisol levels which is a hormone associated with elevated stress levels.

Cuddy believes that by simply striking a power pose or improving posture, you can infuse yourself with the confidence and self assurance you need to achieve your goals. She suggests trying these poses before job interviews, speeches or important meetings.

No, you don’t have to strut down the street with your hands in the air. But you can find a private space to strike a power pose that Cuddy suggests will inject you with the confidence boost that you need to carry yourself successfully through each day.

Power Poses - Best Austin Chiropractor

A, D and F are all POWER POSES. B, C, E are NOT!!!

“How can I improve my power posture or work on power poses?” – Here are 5 postures to work on
1.) Focus on the position of your feet

Whenever you are speaking with a co-worker who seems to be paying attention, and whose upper body is angled toward you, but whose legs and feet have turned toward the door – realize that the conversation is over. Foot positions are revealing even if someone’s legs are crossed.  So when talking to someone, make sure you're pointing your feet into their direction of attention.

2.) Smile – it’ll make you happier
We smile because we are happy. People who smile, without actually feeling happy, can make themselves feel a lot happier, as well as make others around them feel more at ease.

3.) Practice Amy Cuddy’s “power poses” (see image above) before important meetings
Amy Cuddy suggests 3 distinct power poses to practice for 2-3 minutes before you have an important conversation. Try them next time in a quiet place and see if they have the same results for you.

4.) Realign your body more congenially with your conversation partner
If you align yourself more congenially with a conversation partner you will be able to solve tension in conversations and come to solutions more quickly.  Make sure you are physically aligning yourself with that person (sitting or standing shoulder to shoulder facing the same direction). I’ve found this especially true with meeting people you’ve never met before. It’s hard to build rapport at the start, focusing on aligning can make a big difference. Give it a try.

5.) Lower your voice with deep breathing
Although not a specific tip for body posture, this is a good tip. Men and women with deeper voices are more likely to land in leadership positions and are generally perceived as a greater authority.

To lower your voice, especially before an interview, try to take some deep belly breaths. It will relax your throat area, which generally contracts and raises the pitch of your voice.

We've all been there. Work is piling up, bills aren't getting paid, kids are super demanding, and your house is a mess. You know you need to relax – really, you do – but feelings of of relaxing actually make you more stressed out. The truth is that taking a bit of “me” time is far from being selfish and if the thought itself gives you anxiety- then that's called a hint; a symptom that you're not well. So often, we spend the majority of our time doing what it takes to pay those bills, attend to the needs of a growing family, or handle all sorts of other tasks. When we do this without taking time to tend to our own needs, we’re doing everyone around us a disservice, and we’re not helping ourselves, either.

With so much effort “Working Out” …make sure you plan on “Working IN” as well.

Take just a little downtime every day and relax deeply for a few moments. Pay attention to personal relationships, and give yourself permission to slow down. These simple changes will enhance your life experience, plus it will help keep you focused when the stakes are high. Breathe, relax, and unwind. You deserve it.

Sexual frustration shortens lifespans

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Sexual frustration shortens lifespans, at least that's what a new study from University of Michigan shows.  The study found that when male fruit flies sense the pheromones of females who are ready to mate, but are then denied the opportunity to mate, they experience rapid deterioration in their ability to fend off starvation and increased susceptibility to stress – ultimately leading to shorter fruit fly lives.

On the other hand, when male fruit flies were allowed to mate, those same physiological effects were reversed, leading to longer lifespans.  These results give us an idea of how our perceptions of others and our environment can change chemical pathways involved in aging.

Yoga, treadmills, and weightlifting are all great ways to keep in shape. But the fact remains, sex is so beneficial to our health and rarely discussed. Sex has been proven to lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol, and increase circulation. The heartbeat rises from 70 to 150 beats per minute. In fact, people who regularly indulge are half as likely to have heart attacks and strokes than those who don't have sex at all.

Sex is also wonderful for weight loss since 30 minutes will burn 200 calories! In addition sex calms food cravings because it stimulates the production of phenetylamine, a natural amphetamine that regulates the appetite.

Junk Food and Your Brain

It's crazy to me how so many people laugh at the idea of someone wanting to eat healthy and avoid junk food.  In my circle of family and friends, I can see eyes rolling and people joking about “How we're all gonna die anyway.” or “It's my body, I'll eat what I want” or “You only live once!”.  That's a straight fool to think that.  Your decisions hurt “everyone”, it's your body given to you by God and Yes, you only live once- make it count the right way.And it isn't until someone has a heart attack, gets cancer or develops a heart breaking neurodegenerative disease that the ridiculing stops.  Then they ask why this is happening?  We all know that eating junk food is bad.  What's crazy is that we continue to do it anyway.  Here's a pretty good article on why we crave junk food:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/james-clear/why-we-crave-junk-food_b_4261415.html

Why Fish Oil Is So Important

Why Fish Oil Is So Important

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Over the past few years, fish oil has gained a spotlight as a health aid. Found natural is most types of fish and shellfish; the beneficial components of fish oil are omega-3 fatty acids. There are two types of omega-3 fatty acids: Long chain and short chain. The short chain variety is called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and it’s found in plants but it doesn’t have many health benefits. The long chain fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and these are the ones that can improve health.

The main health benefit from fish oil is lower triglyceride levels. Having high triglyceride levels in a leading contributor to developing heart disease and keeping the levels below a certain point helps keep the heart healthy. Fish oil has been shown to lower triglyceride levels by 20 to 50% when taken in moderate amounts. Not only does fish oil aid in preventing heart disease but it can lower the risk of fatal heart complications in people already suffering from heart disease. Those with high blood pressure can also benefit from fish oil. The omega-3 fatty acids help expand blood vessels and this lowers blood pressure, which is also very good for the heart.

There are also benefits involving the brain. Fish oil has had some success in helping treat psychosis. Although not a cure on its own, it can assist in preventing the progression of psychotic illness by being taken when first experiencing the mild symptoms during the onset of the disease. Diseases that affect cognitive processes and memory can also be helped with fish oil. A study done by the Rush Institution for Healthy Aging showed that the risk for Alzheimer’s disease can be lowered by a routine intake of fish oil.

When trying to lose weight, fish oil can be a helpful aid. Not only does it improve the ability to shed weight and lower the risk of obesity but it also lowers blood sugar. This can helps the prevention and management of diabetes. By raising the levels of adiponectin in the body, it assists in regulating glucose and battling insulin resistance. The effectiveness of fish oil being used to treat diabetes has been unclear in studies but it has received positives reviews from consumers.

Although still being studied, fish oil is suspected of being able to provide relief for many ailments. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, fish oil has the potential to ease the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and calm the inflammatory process of chronic disorders. It is also thought to help with asthma, ADHD, depression, autoimmune diseases, and cardiovascular disease. Fish oil has also had some success with fighting dry eyes and glaucoma.
Omega-3 acids are not naturally occurring in the human body so including fish into a diet is one of the few ways to benefit from their health improving qualities. There are also Omega-3 daily supplements available at many health stores and pharmacies.
