Eat Right and Lose that Belly Fat!

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

We try different diets and we try to reduce our portions or reduce the amount of meals we have on a day, or we try to count the calories and exclude all our favorite food from our daily diet, but nothing seems to work: We just can’t get rid of that gorgeous (not really) belly fat of ours! Well, maybe the problem is exactly there, on depriving yourself from certain food.

I know, I know! You probably heard that before, the “eat more, activate your metabolism!” thing. Yes, it is widely known now that what makes you lose fat and lose weight is activating your metabolism and making your body actually burn the excess fat by itself.

Fat isn’t a bad a bad thing for our brains. It is an energy storage and your brain like to hold on to it in case you need it when winter comes; if you activate your metabolism, you will be making your body use more energy for everything you do and your brain will think that you need to use that stored energy and you will start noticing some difference on that scale!

With that said, you know you need to eat more and you probably know that eating lots of cookies won’t do it! The key here will be to know what things you must incorporate in your diet in order to make your body burn that belly fat.

You probably notice that when you gain weight it shows in some areas first and in some other areas later, and that when you lose weight it goes away in certain areas of your body first. That happens because our brain uses the “energy storages” in a very smart way, our brain sees the different “energy storages” in different ways. So there is a way to trick your brain into using the energy of one specific area more than others, though it will be very subtle, as everything on our bodies should be when we are healthy.

Here are three examples of compounds that will help you burn fat specifically from your belly area and where you can find them:

Capsaicin: This is an active component present in chili peppers, known to increase calorie burn, especially if using cayenne pepper. If you are sure you are not allergic or sensitive to chili peppers, this can be a good way to help your body burn extra fat naturally; there are studies that found that capsaicin can help to break down belly fat and make it easier for your body to process and get rid of! Of course you don’t have to eat too much of it, adding a little pepper to some recipes can be both gastronomically interesting and healthy for you and your family.

Polyphenols: “polyphenol antioxidant” is a type of antioxidant (which we know to be good for your skin and for aging!) found in a wide variety of foods, like grapes, berries, green tea, cocoa and even coffee (careful with that one!). The most interesting “polyphenol” for you to look for is resveratrol found in the skin and seeds of dark fruits like dark purple grapes and blackberries. Resveratrol is known to activate the AMPK enzyme (this is your “fat burning activity enzyme”) and reduce fat cells inflammation, which might help you loose weight it added to the right diet.

Nootkatone: We saved the best for last: Nootkatone is found in nature only in grapefruits and it is known in increase significantly the AMPK enzyme activity and help reduce fat accumulation!

Resistance Leads to Progress

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Resistance leads to forward progress.

Ever been to enchanted rock? I’ve visited a few times and I always think about how you can’t climb a smooth mountain. In other words, if a rock mountain is completely smooth and shiny, there are no handholds or footholds for you to grab and make upward progress. I think this is a great metaphor for our lives.

If Life Was Smooth, We Wouldn’t Make Progress.

You see, all those rough spots in your life and the resistance that you had to work through were actually opportunities for growth and upward advancement.

If our life was too smooth you might still move forward, but you wouldn’t make any upward progress. It’s like continually going around the base of the mountain, but never being able to move up. Well, this metaphor also applies to your chiropractic care.

The Early Phase of Chiropractic Care is About Unlocking Years of Stress.

Most people who begin chiropractic care have been living with structural imbalances for quite some time. They may not have been dealing with symptoms for very long, but subluxations, muscle imbalances, etc. can fester under the surface long before any symptoms finally arise.

In the early phases of care most of the work is dedicated to “unlocking” the spine and working to establish balance and stability. As you can imagine, when joints, muscles, and ligaments conform to a certain position they become very stubborn and resist change early on in care.

Therefore, as we work through a comprehensive program of chiropractic care, it is extremely common to initially experience an exacerbation of your current aches and pains, or to even temporarily develop symptoms that are completely new to you.

Like Exercise, Chiropractic is a process whereby results happen over time

When your pain does not change immediately, your first inclination might be to think that something is wrong and that your problem is actually getting worse.

But in most cases, these early flare-ups are like the handholds that propel you upward toward a healthier life. Before we can instill positive change, we first have to undo the initial damage and then move forward from there. It’s like building new muscle at the gym. In order for a muscle to grow you must break it down and then feed it what it needs to grow bigger and stronger.

Just like your adjustments, that familiar soreness you feel after starting an exercise program is evidence that you are making effective progress. If you are afraid of change or are satisfied with the unhealthy status quo, then by all means stay on the smooth path, but understand that you eventually risk the entire mountain coming down on top of you. If, however, you are ready to move upward, know that the path will not always be easy. But every rut you encounter serves a purpose and is an integral part of the road back to health.

Be Strong and Climb On!

The Human Nervous System

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Every medical, anatomical and health related text will confirm that the central nervous system is the master control system of the human body. This means that every single function of your body is controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

austin-Chiropractor-Spine-Chart

Spine Health = Nerve Health = Total Health!

Nerve impulses travel from the brain, out to the spinal cord (protected by your spine) and out through nerves to all parts of the body. Nerve Impulses then return to the brain through return pathways.

Recent research has clearly shown that even activity that occurs at the cellular and molecular levels are controlled and coordinated by the Central Nervous System. At all biological levels (molecular, cellular, organ), communication between the brain and body is essential for health.

The Foundation of Health begins with a healthy Nervous System.

Therefore, anything that interferes with the nervous system also interferes with health and healing.  The primary cause of nerve interference is the spinal column Usually it’s because of abnormal spinal movement and misalignment.  When the spine is in its proper position, it protects the nerve pathways. However, when the spine becomes misaligned, interference to the nerves occur, which reduces the overall function of the nervous system and of that particular organ.

Subluxations Cause Nerve Interference.

austin-chiropractor-subluxation

Nerve disturbance caused by an unhealthy spine is called a vertebral subluxation. Vertebral subluxations are “Silent Killers” because they can be present for long periods of time without any evidence of pain or symptoms. This is the primary reason why “back pain” and spine disease is a leading cause of disability.

When the spine is misaligned or does not move properly, it begins to decay. This is similar to a cavity eating away at a tooth long before a toothache occurs. Subluxations irritate the nerves which interfere with the flow of nerve impulses reducing the body’s inherent natural healing ability.

Just like cavities are here to stay, and need to be addressed forever, Subluxations are a fact of life that to be checked, treated and corrected forever.

Chiropractors are Spine Experts trained at identifying and correcting subluxations.

As long as you choose to get adjusted, you will get the benefits of a healthy spine and nervous system.

Vaccines contain aborted human fetal tissue.

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

IF you're Catholic. . . OR you disagree with abortion, you should probably disagree with the current US vaccination policy as well.  I think it's pretty ironic (and an attack on your rights because most do not know) when parents claim they are pro life yet, when it comes to vaccination, they'll allow aborted fetal tissue to enter their body.

[quote style=”boxed”]For the past 35 years many of the common human virus vaccines — such as measles, rubella, hepatitis A, rabies and poliovirus — have been produced in cells derived from an aborted human fetus[/quote]

CatholicsAbortionSome of today’s vaccines are cultivated on cell lines from aborted human fetuses. This itself promotes ethical questions, which is further reinforced by the fact that few people have knowledge of this fact. Few parents are aware of this when they vaccinate their children, and it is unlikely that the topic is well-known among health professionals. It is reasonable to think that some people based on ethical education and religious reasons will be uncomfortable about this fact.

Cell lines and virus strains from aborted fetuses:

The vaccines that have been cultivated on these lines is rubella (German measles), varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis A and rabies.

Virus strain used in MMR vaccine rubella-component are also taken from aborted fetal tissue. This strain is called RA 27/3 and was obtained from a fetus whose mother had rubella during pregnancy and performed an abortion because of risk of fetal damage.

So if you are going to VAX-JAB yourself or your kids. . . at least ask your doctor if there's a non-aborted fetal tissue option :(

Why you shouldn’t take Antibiotics for a Sinus Infection

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

In short . . .Not only is it almost always useless, but it puts everyone else in jeopardy.

Sinus infections are just nasty.  They drain your energy, leave you exhausted to the point where you almost drown in your own green snot.  Your head aches from the facial pain and you may come off as a crack addict rushing to your doctor to have them prescribe you a nice big dose of antiobiotics.  Roughly 20 percent of all adult antibiotic prescriptions in the United States, it turns out, are written to treat sinusitis.  The problem is that anyone who stays up to date on immunology, pathology, physiology and family medicine literature knows that they're useless.

Antibiotics only kill bacteria, but a whopping 90 percent of sinus infections are caused by viruses, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America. What's more, new research over the past year has proven definitively that antibiotics won't change the course of most sinus infections.

The misuse of antibiotics to treat conditions they can't possibly cure is simply stupid.  It's resulted in “superbug” outbreaks—infections caused by deadly bacteria that have evolved the ability to survive most antibiotics because we don't have the patience or dedication to take care of our body and strengthen our immune system.  The more antibiotics you take, the more likely that you'll develop a drug-resistant infection. That's because, while the drugs kill most of the bacteria, the most naturally resistant ones are most likely to survive—and multiply.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has spent ten years trying to convince doctors to stop dispensing antibiotics for viral conditions in order to preserve the effectiveness these drugs when you actually need it (rare, critical moments).

So the next time your doc wants to prescribe antiobiotics for a sinus infection, say no and try your best to build your immunity by addressing underlying issues such as lack of sleep, poor diet, deficiency of nutrients such as Vitamin D3, Fish Oil or even try natural treatments such as:

Stem Cell Burgers – How Zombies are Made :(

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

The world's first Stem Cell Burger was served up today 8.5.13.  The meat was grown in a laboratory, from cattle stem cells.

Although perfectly round, they pan fried it in sunflower oil (boo) and butter (Yay…unless it was genetically modified as well?

The person who sampled it said it was “close to meat,” and expected it to be softer and as the petri-dish beef contains no fat, it wasn't very juicy.

Today's taste test, coming after five years of research, is a key step toward making lab meat a culinary phenomenon.  Like the problems we are having with genetically modified foods, hormone driven foods, pesticide/fungicide laced foods – I really can't see this being a healthy thing.

It took nearly 20,000 strands to make one 5-ounce patty, which for Monday's taste test was seasoned with salt, egg powder, breadcrumbs, red beet juice and saffron. The project cost $332,000 (Ludacris!!!!!)

Newer Medical Procedures Likely Useless, or Worse

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

A study where scientists reviewed The New England Journal of Medicine from 2001 through 2010 and found 363 studies examining an established clinical practice. In 146 of them, the currently used drug or procedure was found to be either no better, or even worse, than the one previously used.

Among the practices found to be ineffective or harmful were the routine use of hormone therapy in postmenopausal women; high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplant, a complex and expensive treatment for breast cancer that was found to be no better than conventional chemotherapy; and intensive glucose lowering in Type 2 diabetes patients in intensive care, which not only failed to reduce cardiovascular events but actually increased mortality.

The problem here is that often doctors persist with procedures that lack evidence because they seem to make sense.  Basically, if you have cholesterol-clogged arteries, it makes sense that if you open them up it will help. But when studied, it didn’t improve survival.

The point is… before you jump all over the latest and greatest medical procedures (including vaccines, chemotherapy, heart medications and diabetes medications) you might want to investigate on your own the safety of such decisions!  Ask you doctor not only how it works, but does it work?

Detox Your Face

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Lookin all hormonal

Environmental Pollutants, killer cosmetics, chemicals in water, makeup and our food not only contribute to hormonal disorders – but they can also make you look like a hormonal disorder. All of these contribute to our inner toxic load, and it shows up on our faces with such tell-tale signs as blemishes, redness, dry patches or flakiness.

Thankfully, there are many ways to detox your skin from inside out.

Here are 5 tips to DETOX your FACE

1. Water: Yes…water, lots of it.  Drinking water is an obvious way to achieve a glowing, hydrated complexion. Begin your day with a glass of water mixed with 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon honey. During the day drink green tea with lemon or ginger tea, which is bursting with skin-protecting antioxidants.

2. Probiotics: Adding a good probiotic to your diet helps purify your skin from inside out. Regular bowel movements and strong immunity are essential for clear, toxin-free skin and long-term health in general. Instead of buying expensive probiotic yogurts with “live” bacteria, make your own yogurt or invest in a simple yogurt-making machine and experiment with fresh fruit, cereals, honey and even culinary herbs added to your yogurts.

3. Fiber: Increasing the fiber content of your diet not only helps combat bloating, it has a tremendous benefit for your skin. Beware of ready-made fiber supplements which can leave you bloated or even lead to constipation. Make a super-simple cleansing salad with ample amounts of salad greens, grated apples, carrots, radishes and any fresh garden herbs you can find. Fresh nettles and dandelion greens are awesome inner cleansers – splash stinging nettle leaves with boiling water to make them delicious and mild.

4. Home facials: Once a week indulge in a home spa ritual. Choose a quiet evening and get into the mood with nice soothing music and a cup of nettle tea. Make sure you have everything ready for the Green Face Detox: sea salt, clay, essential oils, activated charcoal (you can buy it in health food shops or online).

5. Quarterly Detoxification:  Want to Detox with a Harvard trained MD?  Enroll early by getting on the waiting list –> Dr. Sara Gottfried's 21 Day Detox program.  Register early because it will fill up fast and registration ends soon!

Women: This Is Your Brain During Orgasm

[dcwsb inline=”true”]

Women… finally, a female orgasm in living, gasping color, delivered in a mesmerizing video of brain scans.  The scans show the build up, the big event, and the “recovery” after several areas of the brain light up in a “crescendo” of oxygen-rapacious activity.  This animation shows the functional magnetic resonance imaging, fMRI, brain data of a participant experiencing an orgasm and the corresponding relationships seen within these different regions based on utilization of oxygen levels in the blood. 20 snapshots in time of the fMRI data are taken from a 7 minute sequence. Over the course of the 7 minutes the participant approaches orgasm, reaches orgasm and then enters a quiet period.

The human brain can be separated into regions based on structure and function – vision, audition, body sensation, etc, known as Brodmann's area map.

Oxygen utilization levels are displayed on a spectrum from dark red (lowest activity) to yellow/white (highest). As can be observed, an orgasm leads to almost the entire brain illuminating yellow, indicating that most brain systems become active at orgasm.

Scientists hope that understanding what happens to the brain during orgasm will help them figure out what goes wrong when partners can't achieve one.

Like I mentioned at our previous webinar – Female orgasm is crucial for optimal health.

Don’t take your MD’s advice when it comes to back pain

FIVE studies have now documented the inadequacy of musculoskeletal (basically back and joint) training in medical schools. These studies underscore the need for enhancing student's and doctor's knowledge about musculoskeletal medicine.

  • J Bone Joint Surg Am. 1998 Oct;80(10):1421-7. “…failed to demonstrate basic competency in musculoskeletal medicine.”
  • J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2002 Apr;84-A(4):604-8. “80% of a group of graduates from many of the best medical schools in the United States were deficient in their knowledge of basic facts and concepts in musculoskeletal medicine”
  • J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2005 Feb;87(2):310-4. “…medical school preparation in musculoskeletal medicine is inadequate.”
  • Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2005 Aug;(437):251-259. “…It is therefore reasonable to conclude that medical school preparation in musculoskeletal medicine is inadequate.”
  • J Am Osteopath Assoc. 2006 Jun;106(6):350-5. “Seventy-nine percent of the participants failed the basic musculoskeletal cognitive examination. “

*Side note: Congratulations to the chiropractic profession for having the highest level of musculoskeletal competence.

Given that musculoskeletal complaints are one of the leading reasons people seek the services of a doctor for care, one would have to wonder why the medical profession is unconcerned when it comes to educating their doctors of the future on the finer points of musculoskeletal medicine. Perhaps the moral to this story is one you already know: Patients would be best served by receiving care from a health care provider with more musculoskeletal training – a doctor of chiropractic.

So the next time you or your friend or a family members seeks the advice of a medical doctor regarding back and joint care; make sure you get a second opinion from an expert… it could save your life!
