B12 2 deficiency 1024x1024

Are You Vitamin B12 Deficient?

Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy nerves, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. Because the body cannot make it, you have to get it from food or supplements, and deficiency is more common than many people assume, especially as we age.

Why deficiency matters

B12 deficiency can develop slowly and its early symptoms are easy to miss. They can include fatigue, weakness, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, balance problems, memory changes, and a sore tongue. Because some of these overlap with other conditions, deficiency is sometimes overlooked. A 2017 review in Nature Reviews Disease Primers (PMID 28660890) provides a detailed overview of the causes, presentation, and consequences of B12 deficiency.

Who is at higher risk

  • Older adults, because absorption tends to decline with age.
  • People following strict vegetarian or vegan diets, since B12 comes mainly from animal foods.
  • People taking certain medications such as metformin or long term acid suppressing drugs.
  • People with conditions that affect absorption, including autoimmune gastritis and some gut disorders.

Getting tested and treated

If you have symptoms or fall into a higher risk group, a simple blood test can check your levels. Treatment is usually straightforward and may involve dietary changes, oral supplements, or injections depending on the cause and severity. Megaloblastic anemia from B12 and related deficiencies is well described in the clinical literature (Med Clin North Am 2017, PMID 28189172).

Do not self diagnose or self treat ongoing neurological symptoms. Talk with a healthcare provider who can test, identify the underlying cause, and recommend the right approach for you.
