What happens to the neck during whiplash?
In a collision, the body is pushed suddenly while the head lags for an instant, then follows. The neck is carried quickly through extension and flexion in a fraction of a second. How that plays out depends on many factors:

Nerve roots

Upper back and shoulders
The upper back and shoulders share the load of head and neck movement. They are commonly involved and are evaluated as part of the whole system.
Jaw

Brain and balance systems

A few points are worth stating plainly. A direct blow to the head is not required for a concussion. Loss of consciousness is not required either. Dizziness after whiplash
People use the word dizziness to describe several different experiences: lightheadedness, spinning, unsteadiness, or a foggy, off feeling. Each can point in a different direction.

Arm pain, numbness, or weakness
When a neck injury irritates a cervical nerve root, symptoms may travel away from the neck into the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers.

When whiplash requires emergency care
Most whiplash injuries are not emergencies. But certain symptoms need urgent or emergency medical evaluation, not a routine appointment.

MRI
