Why We Take X-Rays at Family Health Chiropractic

Full-spine X-rays help us see what no examination alone can reveal.

X-Rays Are Part of a Thorough Evaluation

At Family Health Chiropractic in Austin, full-spine X-rays are a standard part of every new patient evaluation. They are not a formality. They are a clinical tool that gives Dr. Gonzalez objective information about your spinal alignment, disc integrity, and structural health that cannot be obtained any other way.

We do not take X-rays to increase the cost of your first visit. We take them because treating the spine without knowing what is actually in it is guesswork. Knowing your specific anatomy makes every adjustment more precise and your care plan more accurately targeted.

What X-Rays Allow Us to See

  • The actual degree of spinal misalignment at each level
  • Loss of normal cervical, thoracic, or lumbar curvature
  • Disc space narrowing that suggests degeneration or herniation
  • Scoliosis and the angle of curvature
  • Bone spurs, arthritic changes, and early degeneration
  • Fractures or pathological findings that contraindicate manipulation
  • Pelvic unlevel and leg length discrepancy
  • Congenital anomalies that affect how we adjust

X-Rays as a Benchmark

One of the most valuable uses of X-rays in corrective chiropractic is establishing a baseline. When we take X-rays at the start of care, we have an objective record of your spinal alignment at that point. After a period of corrective treatment, we can compare follow-up X-rays to measure actual structural change, not just how you feel.

This matters because symptomatic improvement often precedes structural correction. Patients sometimes feel better before the underlying problem is fully resolved. X-ray comparison tells us whether the correction is progressing as expected and guides decisions about adjusting the care plan.

Safety and Radiation Exposure

Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than older film-based systems. A full-spine series at our Austin clinic exposes you to a small fraction of the radiation you receive from natural background sources in a typical year. The clinical benefit of knowing your spinal alignment far outweighs the minimal risk.

We do not X-ray pregnant patients or children 5 and under. For patients with recent X-rays from another provider, we will review those films rather than repeating the study unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic X-Rays

Are X-rays required at every visit?

No. X-rays are taken at your initial evaluation and at progress checkpoints when we need to assess structural change. Routine adjustment visits do not require X-rays.

Can you use X-rays from my medical doctor?

Yes. If you have recent relevant imaging, please bring it or authorize its release. We will review it as part of your evaluation and determine whether additional views are needed.
