Fighting fatigue

Low Energy? Three Ways to Beat Fatigue

Almost everyone goes through stretches of low energy. Sometimes the cause is obvious, like a stretch of poor sleep or a stressful week. When fatigue lingers without a clear reason, though, it is worth looking at the everyday factors that most strongly influence how energetic you feel.

1. Protect your sleep

Sleep is the foundation of energy. Consistent timing, a dark and cool room, and a wind down routine without screens all help. If you snore heavily, wake unrefreshed, or feel sleepy during the day despite enough hours in bed, ask a provider about evaluating for a sleep disorder, since untreated sleep problems are a common and fixable cause of fatigue.

2. Move your body

It can feel counterintuitive, but regular physical activity tends to increase energy rather than drain it. Exercise improves cardiovascular fitness, mood, and sleep quality. The physiology of fatigue and recovery is reviewed in a 2022 narrative review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (PMID 35409591). You do not need intense workouts to benefit, and even regular walking helps.

3. Fuel and hydrate well

Energy dips often track with skipped meals, heavy reliance on refined sugar, and dehydration. Aim for balanced meals with protein, fiber, and whole foods, keep caffeine reasonable and earlier in the day, and drink enough water across the day.

When to look deeper

Persistent, unexplained fatigue can sometimes signal an underlying medical issue, such as anemia, thyroid problems, nutrient deficiencies, or other conditions. If your energy stays low despite good sleep, activity, and nutrition, see a healthcare provider for an evaluation rather than pushing through it.
