5 Restful Positions to Support Recovery

Recovery is where the body adapts and gets stronger, yet it is often the most neglected part of training. How you rest, including the positions you spend time in, can support recovery and mobility. Here are some restful positions and habits that help you bounce back better.

Why Active Rest Matters

Resting well does not always mean lying still. Spending time in positions that gently open up tight areas and let the body relax can ease stiffness from training or long days of sitting.

Restful Positions and Habits

  • A comfortable deep squat hold to open the hips and ankles
  • Lying with legs elevated to relax the lower back and aid recovery
  • A gentle supported backbend over a rolled towel to counter forward postures
  • Side-lying with support to relax the spine
  • Comfortable floor sitting, varying positions often

How to Use Them

Ease into each position only to gentle comfort, never pain, and vary them rather than holding any one for too long. These are meant to feel restful and restorative, not like an aggressive stretch.

The Bigger Recovery Picture

Restful positions are a nice addition, but the foundations of recovery are sleep, sensible training loads, nutrition, and general movement. Use these positions to complement those basics. If a position consistently causes pain rather than relief, ease off and have it assessed.
