How to Not Let Technology Hurt Your Health
Our devices are woven into nearly every part of daily life, and that brings real benefits along with some physical costs. Two of the most common are neck strain from looking down at screens and the effects of long sedentary stretches. Both are manageable once you know what to watch for.
Text neck and screen posture
Spending hours with your head tilted down toward a phone loads the neck and upper back. The relationship between this pattern and neck pain has been studied directly. A 2021 study in Spine (PMID 33290371) examined the association between text neck and neck pain in adults. Interestingly, a 2025 longitudinal study in the Brazilian Journal of Physical Therapy (PMID 40845624) found that flexed smartphone posture itself was not the main risk factor, while low sleep quality and insufficient physical activity were, a useful reminder that posture is only one piece of the picture.
Simple fixes for device use
- Raise the phone toward eye level instead of dropping your head down to it.
- Take frequent short breaks from screens to move and reset your posture.
- Set up your workstation so the monitor top is near eye level.
- Prioritize sleep and regular activity, which the research links to lower neck pain risk.
Move more across the day
Beyond posture, the bigger issue is how long we sit. Breaking up sitting with regular movement supports both musculoskeletal and overall health. The simplest habit is to stand up and move for a couple of minutes every half hour or so.
Technology is not the enemy. The goal is to use it in a way that keeps your body comfortable and healthy, with small adjustments that add up over time.
